Summer is Here! Make Small Changes

As the seasons shift, so should our diets and routine. To best support your body, mind, and emotions, you’ll want to make changes as the weather gets warmer. Keep those changes small, however, especially in climates that still have cooler mornings and evenings.

As the season shifts to summer, the earth gets warmer and so do our bodies. This may lead to internal inflammation, irritation in the mind, needing to control or overload our schedules, breakouts in the skin, and / or loose stools & burning stomach. If you tend to experience these things when it gets really hot, I recommend a short Pitta Cleanse in the months of July or August.

Until then, however, making these few changes will go a long way to pacifying that internal fire within you.

  • Eat Sweet! Natural sweeteners like honey, fruit, and maple syrup pacify pitta. Melons, apples, pears, plums, mango, coconut water go a long way in keeping you cool and calm
  • Enjoy the seasonal abundance! During the summer you can indulge in fresh fruits and veggies.  Now is the best time to enjoy raw foods, as well as cooling foods and spices.
  • Munch Succulent Cooling Veggies! Summer squash, zucchini, fresh leafy salads, cucumbers, and limes
  • Switch to Light Cooling Grains like barley, rice, tapioca, amaranth
  • Enjoy Light cool proteins  such as mung dhal, tofu, tempeh
  • Add in cooling spices and herbs like cilantro, fennel, coriander, cumin, peppermint, lemon balm, hibiscus, and chamomile

This is also the time to curb the hot yoga and sweaty exercise in the middle of the day. Return to that mid-fall when your body needs to warm up and get the internal heat out. For now, think cool 😎
